• Mark the two years, not the job. Everybody will congratulate her on the offer. Almost nobody will name the part that was actually hard — the rejections, the interviews that went quiet, the stretch where she thought it was not going to happen. Saying "two years of that and you did it" lands differently from "congratulations", because it proves somebody was watching the whole thing rather than the last five minutes of it. If you want to give an object, give something she will use at the new job rather than something decorative. A decent notebook, the good pen, the bag that actually fits a laptop. Flowers are a lovely thing that is over in a week. Then put a date in your calendar for about three weeks out. The messages stop after a few days, and week three is when she has actually started, is out of her depth, and is wondering whether she has made a mistake. Nobody checks in then. Be the one who does.
