My oldest friend moved to Melbourne. Video calls keep collapsing under the time difference. What actually keeps a friendship alive across eight time zones?

  • Stop trying to have the call. The call is the thing that keeps failing, and every failed attempt makes the next one heavier — eventually neither of you suggests it, and that is the point where people quietly conclude the friendship has faded, when actually only the scheduling has. Move most of it to voice notes. They cost almost nothing to send: you can record one while walking to the shop, they can listen while cooking, and nobody has to be awake at the same time. They also carry tone, which is the thing text loses and the thing you actually miss about somebody. Send small and often rather than saving it up. A saved-up catch-up becomes a debt, and debts get avoided. If you do want something live, stop negotiating the time. Pick one slot, keep it, and accept that it is slightly bad for both of you. A standing awkward time beats a perfect time you never manage to find.

Answering needs an account. Not to make you sign up for the sake of it — an answer here is advice somebody in a hard week may act on, and advice with nobody behind it is how a question site fills up with confident nonsense. Asking needs nothing.
