Why it lands

Declining becomes a habit and then an identity, and the street quietly stops asking — which confirms the thing the person already feared. Depression, illness, shyness and simple bad timing all look identical from the outside, and all of them produce a no. The invitation that eventually lands is almost never the first one, and the people who most need asking are precisely the ones whose refusals train everyone to stop.

How

Keep it low-stakes and recurring rather than a big special occasion: “We do coffee on Sunday mornings, same time, no need to say — just turn up if you fancy it.” Say it again in a month. An open invitation without a reply expected removes the cost of saying no again.
