Ask about the thing they mentioned last week
The difficult meeting, the scan, the argument with their sister. They probably assume you forgot, because most people do.

Why it lands
Living with someone produces a constant stream of half-finished updates, and almost none of them get followed up. The person telling you notices. Remembering a specific thread a week later says something that no amount of general interest does: that their week is being tracked by somebody other than them. It is also the difference between living alongside somebody and living with them, and the gap opens up slowly enough that neither person names it.
How
Be concrete about which thing. “Did your sister ever call back?” rather than “how are things?” — the second one invites "fine" and gets it. If you are bad at remembering, write it down when they say it. Using a note is not cheating.
