Why it lands
This is the smallest possible act with a genuinely visible result, which is exactly why it works. It requires no conversation, no permission and no reciprocity, so it sidesteps every reason people hesitate. And it is disproportionately useful to whoever on your street is oldest, most recently out of surgery, or working the shift that ends after dark — none of which you necessarily know about.
How
When you bring your own cans up, take the ones next door too. Put them back exactly where that household keeps them, which is the detail that signals it was deliberate rather than random. Do not leave a note and do not mention it. The anonymity is doing real work here: it removes any obligation to thank you, which is what would make it a transaction instead of a gift.
