Why it lands

An argument at least gives you something to fix, and a moment to fix it in. Most family silences have neither. One person moved, a couple of Christmases got missed, and a decade went by without anybody deciding anything — which makes it harder to break rather than easier, because there is no apology to make and no anniversary to hang it on. Family also supplies its own excuse for waiting: you will see them eventually. That turns out to be true, and the eventually is a funeral.

How

Do not build up to it, and do not open with the gap. Apologizing for ten years of nothing makes the silence the subject of the call and puts them in the position of having to forgive you for it. Say you were thinking about them and ask one specific thing — about the house, the job, their kids by name. If you do not have a number, the relative who does will give it to you and be pleased to. It takes about ten minutes and is awkward for roughly the first ninety seconds.
