A warm engine bay on a cold night is the best shelter on the street, and cats find it reliably. What happens next is well known to vets and to almost nobody else, and it is horrible and entirely preventable. This is the cheapest kind act on the site measured in seconds, and the only reason it is not universal is that most people have never been told to do it.

Before you start the engine on a cold morning, bang the hood once with your palm and glance underneath and at the wheel arches. If you have a cat of your own, the same applies to the neighbors' — and a word to whoever parks next to you spreads it further than doing it alone.
