Why it lands
A family runs on shared history, and the person who joined it by marriage has none of it. They cannot follow the story about the caravan, they do not know who Uncle Ray is, and every laugh in the room lands a beat away from them. Nobody is being unkind — that is the problem. Everyone is being perfectly pleasant and everyone assumes somebody else has them, which is how a person spends four hours being genuinely welcome and completely alone. It falls to nobody by default, which is the only reason it has to fall to you.

Ask about the parts of their life this family has nothing to do with — their own family, their work, the thing they actually care about — so they get half an hour of not being an appendix to somebody. And when the next reference lands, translate it in one sentence without making a performance of it: who Ray was, why the caravan is funny. Those sentences are what turn a room of strangers' stories into a family you are in.
