Why it lands

The hesitation is about causing offence — implying someone cannot manage. But the person visibly struggling has already announced that they cannot, and the far more common experience is being watched by a dozen people who did nothing. Asking rather than assuming resolves the etiquette problem completely: it puts the decision with them, where it belongs.

How

Ask, do not grab: “Can I take one end?” If they say no, accept it instantly and move on. If yes, follow their lead on how to carry it and hand it back at the top rather than continuing to the destination.
