Why it lands
A false story travels much further than its correction ever will, and it travels through ordinary people sharing in good faith because something made them angry. The emotional intensity is the mechanism — the angrier a post makes you, the more likely it is engineered and the less likely you are to check. Being the link in the chain that breaks is a genuinely useful act with no visible reward.
How
Search the claim before sharing, and check the date — recycled old stories are the commonest form. If you have already shared something false, post the correction rather than quietly deleting, because deletion does not reach the people who saw it.
