Why it lands
Door and reception security is among the most isolating work there is: long static shifts, no colleagues within speaking distance, and a constant stream of people actively avoiding engagement. The loneliness is the job's defining feature and almost nobody mentions it. Thirty seconds of actual conversation from someone who passes daily is, repeatedly, what people in that work describe as the thing that makes a shift bearable.

Learn the name and use it. Have an actual exchange rather than a nod — the weather, the match, how long is left of the shift. Do it on the way in when you are not rushing, not on the way out when you are.
