Stand up before anyone has to ask

Asking for a seat means announcing a pregnancy, an illness or a disability to a carriage of strangers.

Why it lands

The cost of asking is not the asking — it is the public disclosure. Someone with a hidden condition, an early pregnancy or chronic pain has to explain themselves to a crowd to get a seat they need. Standing up before anyone asks removes the disclosure entirely. Doing it wordlessly matters too: an announced offer creates the same public moment in reverse.

How

Stand, move away and look at your phone. Do not gesture at the seat or ask whether they would like it, which forces them to accept in front of everyone. If they do not take it, somebody else will and nothing is lost.
