Why it lands
Your mail carrier probably knows your dog's name, which step is loose, and roughly when you moved in. You have likely never spoken. Delivery work is one of the few jobs where someone is physically present in your life several times a week and structurally invisible — no counter to stand at, no moment where a thank you naturally fits. That absence is the whole reason a note lands so hard. People keep these. Carriers have been known to tape them inside the truck.
How
Write one sentence on an index card or a sticky note and tape it inside or beside your mailbox the night before. Say something only you could say: the specific thing, not the general sentiment. “You've been leaving our packages under the awning when it rains and we've definitely noticed.” If you want, tape a granola bar or a soda to it. Don't leave cash — most carriers aren't permitted to accept it, and it puts them in an awkward position.
