Bring tools out when someone is moving in

Moving day is the one day a household owns everything and can find nothing. A screwdriver at the right hour is remembered for years.

Why it lands

The first day in a house is a specific kind of helpless: the bed needs assembling, the tools are in an unlabelled box, and the shops shut in an hour. Any offer made that day is received at maximum value. It is also the only day the social cost of knocking on a stranger's door is zero, because everybody expects it — which makes it the single best opportunity to start a decade of knowing your neighbors.

How

Go over in the afternoon, not the morning when the van is still being emptied. Take something concrete: a toolkit, a kettle and two mugs, a roll of bin bags. Say which house you're in, then leave — the worst thing you can do on moving day is stay and talk.

Nobody has marked this one yet. You could be the first.
