Pick up what fell out of someone's bag

Gloves, cards, a child's toy. The owner will not discover the loss until it is far too late to retrace.

Why it lands

Small items leave bags unnoticed, which means the owner has no idea where or when. A glove is an inconvenience; a bank card, a key or a child's comfort object is a genuinely bad evening. The window in which it can be returned is measured in seconds — after that it is permanently gone — which makes speed the whole of the act.

How

Pick it up and catch them, rather than shouting from a distance which people rarely register as aimed at them. If they have gone, hand it to the nearest shop or counter, which is where they will retrace to.
