Find out who is not allowed to accept tips

Many of the people who help you most are barred from taking money. Something small they can accept works instead.

Why it lands

Drivers, nurses, teachers, council staff and most public-sector workers cannot take cash, and offering it puts them in the awkward position of refusing you. The instinct behind the tip is sound — you want the gratitude to cost you something — but the form is wrong. Food, drink or a written compliment to their employer all convert the same impulse into something they are permitted to receive.

How

Ask, or assume they cannot. Sealed food and drink are almost always fine. A written note to the company is better than either: it is the only form of thanks that follows them into a performance review.
